The Wicomico County Sheriff and County Executive recently announced their intention to enter into a MOU with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the 287(g) program. Due to the lack of communication with the County Council or the public, important details about the extent of the county's involvement remain unknown, and there is much misinformation on social media resulting from this failure to communicate. Although county residents are deeply divided on the illegal immigration issue, both sides are wondering why no public meeting was held to inform residents about this hot button topic that may have profound implications for the good or bad. Will county taxpayers bear some of the financial burden for enforcing immigration law? Will the U.S. government indemnify the County from any civil liabilities that may arise? Does the already overburdened Sheriff's Dept. have sufficient human resources to assist in enforcing Federal immigration laws?
