On the Thursday, Oct 9 installment of OPEN AGENDA (S2 E54) you'll witness the fiasco created by the County Executive during a work session with the County Council. The Executive made a rare appearance before the Council to discuss her proposed 287(g) agreement with ICE that would authorize local law enforcement agencies to serve Federal immigration arrest warrants to illegal aliens already being held at the county Dept. of Corrections facility. The nature of the agreement between the County and ICE has been subject to continuous flux and change, and it became clear that the Executive Administration still hasn't figured out how any such agreement will be structured, which local law enforcement agencies will be involved, cost to taxpayers, extent of the County's exposure to civil liabilities, and perhaps most importantly, which branch of government can authorize the agreement. When pressed with difficult questions by the County Council and its attorney, the Executive attempted to bully her way through with frequent interruptions and overt condescension, finally causing the Council President to gavel her down. It was simply astonishing that the Executive and her Law Dept. hadn't figured out the most fundamental elements of this prospective agreement with ICE, which they conceived behind closed doors, while misinforming the public and changing their story several times. No decisions could be made by the end of the work session, however, the Executive was invited by the Council President to submit a resolution if she desired. But contrary to the usual protocols, this was done without polling the council members for consensus. The chaos, confusion and spread of misinformation that have become the hallmarks of this administration were on display Tuesday night for all to see. Tune in and be informed.
