It looks like the agreement with ICE has been crushed in Wicomico County. On the Friday, November 7 edition of OPEN AGENDA (S2 E66) you'll see how the County Executive, without prior notice, pulled out of her much publicized and highly controversial plan to have Sheriff's deputies and corrections officers assist ICE with immigration law enforcement. The Executive's excuse for this surprising action was a mid-October guidance memorandum from the Maryland Attorney General interpreting existing state law that seems to prohibit the use of Sheriff's deputies to serve 287(g) warrants, but does not appear to prohibit the use of corrections officers. She also expressed her belief that the Maryland General Assembly is likely to pass new legislation forbidding local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE (even though such legislation failed last year), while denying that public opinion influenced her decision. It is simply implausible that the Executive and the County Attorney were unaware of the law or the possibility that it may be further strengthened in the next session of the General Assembly, so why the sudden change of heart? As usual, chaos and confusion follow in the wake of this County Executive, thus unnecessarily creating fear and division within our community. Regardless of whether or not you support local law enforcement assisting ICE, she has undeniably made an enormous mess once again. Now she has angered constituents on both the right and the left and has never looked weaker. Tune in and be informed.
