On the Friday, April 3rd installment of OPEN AGENDA, our panel discusses the Westside Neighborhood Alliance's (“WSNA”) efforts to promote youth sports programs and community events in western Wicomico County. Jim Adkins, a regular OPEN AGENDA contributor, has been helping WSNA establish and expand youth sports programs on the West Side by greasing the wheels for assistance from other youth sports programs and advocates, including Sharptown Commissioner Mark Carroll. Mr. Adkins is also helping WSNA to obtain needed grant funding by facilitating contacts with the appropriate government officials, including incumbent District 2 Councilman, Jeff Merritt. WSNA (not to be confused with the West Side Community Task Force) leases the Westside Community Center from the county, which is used for indoor sports programs and community meeting space. Built in 1959, the Community Center's roof has developed leaks over the past few years and will soon be due for replacement. Although no funds for roof replacement were allocated in the current budget by the administration, nor included in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) until 2029, it is likely that the County Council will soon approve emergency funding to resolve the problem. In addition to WSNA's commitment to youth sports, it also offers various adult sports & fitness programs and organizes community events to help make Wicomico County a better place for all.
