Halloween isn't the only day for horror stories. On the Friday, October 31 edition of OPEN AGENDA (E2 S64) we tell the tale of the year-round horror involving a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) tank in Hebron that emits nauseating odors and is ruining the quality of life for local residents. Our guest, Lynette Kenney, lives just a stone's throw from the DAF tank and tells the heartbreaking story of the lies and deception that lead to this industrial facility receiving regulatory approval to be built in an agricultural zone. Now, residents for miles around must live with the putrid smells from the rendered and concentrated animal waste products that are trucked in from elsewhere. Former County Council Attorney, Bob Taylor, provides legal analysis of the events that lead to construction of the DAF tank and the lawsuit recently filed against both the tank's owners/operators AND Wicomico County for it's failure to enforce the zoning code. Previous county executives and Planning & Zoning Commissions are responsible for allowing this industrial operation to be built in the first place. But it's also clear that the current County Executive is fully empowered to take the actions necessary to enforce the zoning code and have the DAF tank shut down. Unfortunately, she has instead chosen to do absolutely nothing, thus leaving taxpayers exposed to the financial consequences of the lawsuit and allowing the lives and investments of the long-time residents of this quiet farming community to be destroyed. If you think the County Executive is looking out for you, better think again. Tune in and be informed.
After you watch this episode of OPEN AGENDA, we encourage you to also view the following video titled, "Gut Soup," which tells even more of this sad story. It will literally make you sick to your stomach.
