On the Monday, November 10 installment of OPEN AGENDA (S2 E67), we explore the County Executive's approach to crisis management (or mismanagement). Despite the multiple time-sensitive crises plaguing Wicomico County, the Administration is approaching them at a pace slower than molasses in January, while proffering poor solutions. The Executive was years late in authorizing design of the new landfill cell, but has now further exacerbated the problem by failing to solicit construction bids when promised (it was supposed to start in early August). Her absurd solution was to progressively close the landfill. Was there really a crisis or was it a distraction? The Administration failed to remove a sufficient volume of stockpiled dredge spoils from Sharps Point on time, so now the Wicomico River won't be dredged before October 2026, which could impede commercial navigation. To make matters worse, the Administration has proposed the most expensive, disruptive and environmentally-unfriendly plan imaginable to dispose of the dredge spoils. Design for the (expensive) retrofit of the Verizon Building for the county's use use hasn't yet begun, but meanwhile it remains vacant with no rental income and is leaking taxpayer money. Why has the Executive remained silent on the status of these projects (and others)? Obviously, she doesn't want taxpayers to know that the things that matter the most aren't getting done. I guess passing liquor bills for the benefit of her most valued campaign donors is more important.
