The sudden and astonishing reorganization of the Salisbury City Council's principal officers is the topic of discussion on the Friday, February 13 edition of OPEN AGENDA (S3 E10). At this week's legislative session, without prior warning the newest member of the council, Melissa Holland, moved to replace the council president and vice president. Her motion was met with stunned silence. A vote ensued resulting in councilwoman April Jackson's ascension to the presidency and councilwoman Sharon Dashiell's appointment as vice president. Only (former) president, Angela Blake and her perpetual ally, Michele Gregory voted to maintain the status quo. There are several possible reasons for the “mutiny” that may include Blake”s and Gregory's repeated attacks on the mayor and city clerk, unpopularity of their push for ranked choice voting, failure to implement a democratic means of filling council vacancies, and the council's general dysfunction that prevents the important things from getting done. Will new leadership bring an end to the toxic environment and drama that has long defined the city council? OPEN AGENDA will be watching closely so tune in and be informed.
A mini-Shakespearian drama played out this week at the Salisbury City Council as April Jackson emerged as the new Council President after Angela Blake's brief tenure came to an abrupt end. Why and how did it happen? Check out the latest episode of Open Agenda and note the time stamps below!
