Our March 13 episode brings you the disturbing news of an apparent attempt to promote racism on the Salisbury University campus. The Maryland Federation of College Republicans, chaired by Colin McEvers—a local SU student and candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates (District 32), arranged a forum that was to be held earlier this week with Jared Taylor, founder of the online magazine, American Renaissance. Mr. Taylor is well known for his advocacy of white supremacy and self-segregation, as well as his belief in scientific eugenics—the very same concepts embraced by the Nazis and other notoriously racist groups. The forum has been postponed for security reasons but may be rescheduled for a later date. The vast majority of Republicans reject the extremist views of McEvers and Taylor. In fact, the Maryland Republican Party has unequivocally denounced the forum, and about half of the membership of the Salisbury College Republicans have reportedly resigned as the result of this event having been scheduled. But the concerns extend beyond the SU campus into county politics. Colin McEvers is well known to be an ardent supporter of County Executive Julie Giordano. Additionally, other notable figures who orbit around the Executive, including Councilman James Winn, have expressed antisemitic views and have attempted to force their personal religious beliefs onto others during the conduct of official government business. Yet, as the holder of the highest public office in Wicomico County, Ms. Giordano has not condemned the racist and antisemitic views expressed by some of her closest allies and supporters. Should her silence be interpreted as a tacit endorsement of their intolerance and hate? Do we really want to be governed by extremists who use racial and religious enmity to divide our small community to further their own political careers? Tune in and be informed.
